Can This Monster Be Stopped - It Just Keeps Going, and Going and Going
Despite a sluggish economy and a drop in consumer spending, the Nintendo Wii shows no sign of slowing in momentum anytime soon. It continues to lead game- console sales. The sluggish US economy does not seem to be hurting the gaming industry as a whole, either. In spite of the fact consumer spending has slowed, the video gaming industry has seen sales go the other way. Video games sales in the United States, alone, are up 28% from a year ago according NPD Group. Nintendo's Wii remained on top of the mountain last month as sales for Wii continued to rise. It has sold about 13.5 billion units in the US and 31 million worldwide since its launching. This has put the Wii in the number 1 spot among game consoles sales. As its popularity continues to grow, it shows no sign of giving up its position of number 1 any time soon. Microsoft's XBox 360 holds the second place spot. It has sold 12 million units in the United States and 20 million world wide. Sony's PS3 has third place with 5.5 million units sold in the United States and 15 million world wide. It's not much of a surprise that the Wii has left Sony and Microsoft in a cloud of dust. The Wii is more affordable to the consumer that the PS3 and XBox 360. Some argue that the Wii is not in the same category of the PS3 and the XBox 360. That the Wii is a "toy" . This may be a fair argument to make. Selling 555,000 units, the Wii did dominate sales in July. Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 225,000 units during that same period and Microsoft's XBox 360 only sold 205,000 units despite a cut in price.
