Mob of teenagers attacks British police on litter line

Two British police officers were injured after some 30 teenagers, some in school uniform, attacked them "like animals" after they asked a girl to fetch a piece of litter, officials said Friday.

One of the officers was treated in hospital for bite wounds after the attack in a shopping area in Croydon, south London, on Wednesday. The officers, aged between 34 and 29, were on sick leave with bruises and injuries to the knee.

The teenager was initially asked to fetch a piece of litter. It did so immediately, but he fell again. When asked to enter again, she became aggressive, and a group of teenagers gathered and attacked tour.

A number of men in their 30s and 40s and more women joined the attack. All the speakers were black, London Metropolitan Police.

One of the policemen who was bitten and is now recovering at home, said: "They acted like animals, but I hate to use the term" animals "because they would not do so. The animals have a reason to do something.

"This is just nonsense violence. It is difficult to believe they could do something like this - and a policeman."

A 15-year-old girl was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and bailed. When his parents arrived to take its place, they complained of having their summer holidays interrupted, attacked one of the officers said.

The issue of youth violence was highlighted by a series of deadly knife attacks in London and elsewhere in recent months, and was strongly debated issue during the campaign for mayor of the capital in May .

In addition, a 13-year-old boy was questioned after being arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a 17-year-old youth who was gunned down last week as he went for a haircut in Sheffield.
