Amtrak and NJ Transit said train service is being restored at about 5:45 pm, but delays were expected after more than an hour, without the trains running. From 7 hours, delays ranging from 60 to 90 minutes were reported in New York Penn Station.
Thousands of evening commuters and rail travellers in the north were delayed Wednesday after a power outage snarled train service in the region.
Train service between Boston and Philadelphia, including the city of New York, was hit by a power blackout after severe thunderstorms passed through the region, Amtrak. The blackout also extended west to Harrisburg, Pa.
The suburban trains in the region need electricity to run air son. The cause of the crash was under investigation, Amtrak.
In New Jersey, the blackout affected occupied the Northeast corridor in and out of New York and the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line.
Lauren Gilbert Washington, DC, which grounded near Newark on board an Amtrak Acela train bound for Washington, said the delay was frustrating.
"We take the train to avoid airport delays storm and we can not win. We are stuck," said Gilbert.
